What 'equalities' means
An equal society protects and promotes equal, real freedom and genuine opportunity to live in the ways people value and would choose, so that everyone can flourish. An equal society recognises people's different needs, situations and goals and removes the barriers that limit what people can do and can be.
This term ‘equalities' applies to all the actions taken to make this type of society (or neighbourhood or community) a reality.
Note: equality does not mean sameness, and creating an equal society doesn't mean trying to make everyone the same.
In the East Brighton New Deal for Communities (NDC) programme, equalities is the responsibility of everyone and runs through all the themes (education, health, safety, taking control, enterprise and environment) of our work, but the Equalities Manager oversees the work.
