Momma Cherri with Students
This theme focuses on increasing the educational attainment, attendance and aspirations of young people and lives adults the opportunities to improve their skills. New Deal for Communities (NDC) projects such as Pupil Potential and Aspire have contributed to the improved GCSE results at Falmer High School.
In 2005 there was an impressive 10% increase in the number of pupils at the school who gained 5 or more A*-C grades in their GCSEs. The NDC helped to set up the training kitchen in Falmer High School to enable both school pupils and adults to become qualified for careers in the hospitality and catering industry.
The NDC Gateway to Learning Teams, who encourage and support local adult learners attending courses at the Bridge and Whitehawk Inn, have been recognised as an example of good practice and similar teams are now being set up in Brighton and Hove using European Social Funding.
